The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) E-Bike Trade-in Program helps get unsafe e-bikes, illegal mopeds, and their batteries off the streets and out of New Yorkers' homes.
Eligible food delivery workers will be able to replace their unsafe devices with certified, high-quality e-bikes and compatible batteries.
The program aims to enhance public safety by:
- Reducing the fire risks posed by uncertified lithium-ion batteries from e-bikes
- Removing non-street legal mopeds from roadways
The program allows eligible, selected participating food delivery workers to exchange their unsafe, operable devices and batteries for a new certified Whizz Storm 2 e-bike and spare certified battery.
The term “certified” refers to an electric bicycle (e-bike) or battery that was certified to a UL standard by an accredited testing laboratory. The applicable standards are UL 2849 for e-bikes and UL 2271 for batteries.
DOT expects to distribute approximately 400 e-bikes during the pilot program.
The application period reopened at 9 AM on June 12. Eligible food delivery workers may now apply to be added to the program's waitlist. The deadline to apply is June 30 at 9 PM.
Approved participants will be notified by email about next steps.
