RSV infection is a common respiratory virus that often causes mild, cold-like symptoms. It can make some people severely ill. 

RSV spreads by:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Touching a surface contaminated by the saliva or mucus of an infected person

Symptoms of RSV often include:

  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Congestion
  • Chills
  • Low fever
  • Loss of appetite

RSV infections are most common in the fall and winter. There is no specific treatment for RSV.

RSV vaccines and medicines can help prevent infection in:

  • People ages 60 and older
  • Infants
  • Young children
