Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) devices capture axle weights and gross vehicle weights of moving vehicles. Vehicles are weighed without stopping. This technology offers a more efficient method to weigh vehicles and provides useful data.
The Weigh-In-Motion enforcement system is installed on the City-owned portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) from the vicinity of Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street in Brooklyn. The weigh-in-motion sensors are synced with license plate cameras. Any vehicle exceeding gross vehicle and axle weight limits on the BQE will be issued a fine.
This program will help to discourage overweight trucks from putting additional wear and tear on this aging piece of infrastructure as New York City develops a long-term repair plan for the BQE. Learn more about BQE Corridor Vision.
The WIM program will be implemented in two phases:
- Starting on August 10, 2023, there will be a 90-day warning period for the Queens bound direction
- Installation for the Staten Island-bound direction is anticipated for later this year, with a 90-day warning period
At the end of each 90-day warning period, overweight vehicle will receive a $650 fine per violation.
