New York State offers the Clean Energy Systems Property Tax. This tax exemption is meant to encourage the installation of clean energy systems in residential and commercial properties.

Under this exemption, your property taxes will not increase as a result of installing a clean energy system. This is for a period of 15 years.

Eligible energy systems include:

  • Solar or wind energy
  • Farm waste energy
  • Micro-hydroelectric energy
  • Fuel cell electric generating system
  • Micro-combined heat and power generating equipment system
  • Electric Energy Storage System
  • Fuel-flexible linear generator electric generating system

To apply:

  1. Review the RP 487 instruction sheet to make sure you are following program rules
  2. File a Notice of Intent to Construct Clean Energy Systems
  3. Complete and submit the RP 487 Application for Tax Exemption of Solar, Wind, or Certain Other Energy Systems
  4. Make two copies of the application
    • The first copy is for the Department of Finance (DOF)
    • The second copy is for New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)

These documents must be received or post-marked by this date. This is for benefits to begin on July 1 of the year you apply.
