The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) run nationwide tests of their emergency alert systems.

These systems are:

  • Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs)
  • Emergency Alert System (EAS)

WEAs are designed to warn the public via text alerts about:

  • Dangerous weather
  • Missing children
  • Other critical situations

The EAS broadcasts information by radio and television in major emergencies as well.

The systems will notify you 24 hours in advance of system tests. You will only get the WEA test if you have the test setting enabled on your cell phone. You can opt-in for online tests.

Opt-in for WEA test alerts on Android and iOS phones.
