All stores in New York City, regardless of size, cannot leave their doors or windows open while air conditioning is running.

Chain stores—stores with five or more locations in the city—must also post a sign on all exterior doors where customers can see it that says you can report violations of the Air Conditioning Law to 311.

The City's air conditioning law does not apply to:

  • Doors and windows that are open to serve food and beverages
  • Doors and windows that are open during the delivery and shipping of goods

The City doesn’t accept complaints about commercial buildings without air conditioning.
