Ice Safety Guidelines

Ponds and lakes that appear to be frozen may not be safe for skating. Temperatures must be below freezing for several weeks and ice must be at least six inches thick before it can hold the weight of a person.

As soon as the ice is strong enough, the City sets up safe-skating areas throughout the five boroughs. The Department of Parks and Recreation will post signs to show that these areas are safe for winter sports.
