The Department of Health airs television advertisements with strong anti-smoking messages. Research has suggested that hard-hitting, emotional messages can help people change smoking behavior. The Department of Health's objective is to provide information, opportunities and resources to help New Yorkers stop smoking and to save lives.

Though the ads have prompted many people to call smoking quit lines for help, they do contain language and images that may be upsetting. Complaints about this advertising campaign are accepted.
