The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) conducts a special christmas tree collection every January. During the collection period, live trees are collected, chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for NYC's parks, institutions, and community gardens.

This year's christmas tree collection period has ended, but you can put your live tree for regular collection.

Set out your clean Christmas trees and wreaths with your other composting curbside the evening before your Curbside Composting collection day. Compost is collected every week on the same day as your recycling.

No appointments are necessary.

Take apart your artificial tree to recycle the base and trunk (pole) with metal, glass, plastic, and cartons on your recycling day. Make sure to remove all lights, ornaments and tinsel before placing at the curb.

Otherwise, set it out as trash on a regular collection day.
