You can learn about propane tank storage and disposal rules in New York City.

The NYC Fire Code allows one- or two-family properties to store a maximum of two 20-pound propane cylinders outdoors.

For all other residential properties, including apartment building roofs and terraces, storage and use are limited to a single small disposable 16.4-ounce cylinder.

Outdoor barbecue grills can be installed, operated, and maintained on any residential premises if they are:

  • Designed to use charcoal or electricity
  • Have a total grate area of no more than 10 square feet
  • Are not installed or operated within 10 feet of any flammable waste or material

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) does not collect propane tanks, such as those used by gas barbecues, because they are pressurized and may explode when compressed in the garbage truck.

You can drop off the tanks at a SAFE Disposal Event. Events are held every spring and fall. Learn more on the Special Waste Disposal page.

You can also:

  • Exchange a used tank when buying a new tank
  • Bring a tank to a hardware store or private propane dealer for reuse or recycling
  • Bring a used tank to a scrap metal dealer for recycling
